The Man With

Dziga Vertov devotes little attention to women in his writings about the kino- affectionateness. He assigns the kino-eye several related meanings. It de nones a type of photo-making: the union of impropriety with newsreel to further the battle for the communist decoding of the world (Kino-Eye 41-2). It signifies the cameras optical modality: more perfect than the humanity eye for fathoming the chaos of those visual phenomena which evoke spatial prop (Film 52). And it describes a spinal fusion of human being and machine: I am the kino-eye, I am a mechanical eye (Kino-Eye 17). But sexual activity does not seem to be a property or concern of the kino-eye. Yet Vertovs snuff it silent film, human beings with a Movie tv camera (1929), wide held to be the apotheosis of his kino-eye philosophy, overflows with images of women. Man with a Movie Camera shows proletarian women and bourgeois women doing what they do and interacting with one another. It depicts women working, exerc ising, sun-bathing; women sleeping; women light up; women getting married, enceinte birth, mourning near graves. The film presents men, too, in different postures and activities, precisely the camera focuses most intently on women. Many critics knock off the presence of women in Man with a Movie Camera. In his book-length study of the film, Constructivism in Film, Vlada Petric includes neither women nor gender in his coarse catalog of the films themes. Likewise, in Peace between Man and Machine, curing Feldman uses woman and human interchangeably, implying that gender is not an important distinction. And in a compel analysis of mimesis in Man with a Movie Camera, to which this newspaper owes a great debt, Malcolm Turvey admits in a footnote that in that respect may be a gendered dimension to Vertovs vision of a synthesis between human beings and machines, hardly his paper does not consider this dimension (41).
